Bio: Mellody Hobson is President of Ariel Investments, LLC, a Chicago-based money management firm that serves individual investors and 401(k) plans through its no-load mutual funds. Additionally, Ariel manages separate accounts for corporate, public, union and nonprofit organizations. As President, Mellody is responsible for firm-wide management and strategic planning, overseeing all operations outside of research and portfolio management. Additionally, she serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the mutual funds.

Mellody has become a nationally recognized voice on financial literacy and investor education. She is a regular financial contributor on ABC’s Good Morning America, a featured columnist in Black Enterprise magazine and a spokesperson for the annual Ariel/Schwab Black Investor Survey. Beyond her work at Ariel, Mellody is a director of three public companies: DreamWorks Animation, Estée Lauder, and Starbucks. She also serves on the boards of various civic organizations including the Chicago Public Library and its foundation, The Field Museum, The Chicago Public Education Fund, and the Sundance Institute. Additionally, she is on the Board of Governors of the Investment Company Institute, a trade organization for the US fund industry dedicated to protecting shareholder interests and educating the public about investing.

Mellody earned her degree from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of International Relations and Public Policy and is a former trustee of the University.
