Should You Store Your Personal Health Records Online?

Although most services have gone online in today’s digital age (e.g. banking, investing, bill payment, etc.), our personal health records (PHRs) remain stuck in the Stone Age.  Most medical records are paper-based only and not accessible online.

Why should I store my health records and other personal records online?

Good question.  You may have been lucky enough thus far to have avoided a burglary, natural disaster, computer hard drive failure, and misplacing your documents.  But would you be prepared if something happened?  What if you were vacationing in Hawaii and lost your driver’s license?  It’d be a real nuisance when you tried to get on the return flight home.  Trust me, it happened to someone I know.

I heard a story the other day from a MyEsafeDepositBox (MESDB) user.  (MESDB is one of the tools we’ve chosen to offer with a Qvisory membership.)  She arrived at the airport and realized she had forgotten her driver’s license.  She pulled up her MESDB account on her laptop and showed the security agent, who let her proceed onto the flight.

All catastrophes set aside, what about online storage for practical reasons?  Storing your health and personal documents online provides you with portability.  Moving can be a very stressful time.  When you arrive at your destination, you basically need to start all over again.  You need to have information faxed or mailed over by your doctor, dentist, and veterinarian.  Having all of that information online in one place would simplify your life and reduce wait times.  You may also save some money, as many doctors now charge you to send copies of your records.

What are examples of health and personal documents I can store online?

Basically, anything you’d like to backup.  Be aware that some PHR tools allow you to upload and/or fax documents to your account, while others restrict you to simply typing in your medical history.  See the section on functionality and the comparison chart below for more information.

Here are just a few examples of the types of documents you can store online:
  • Doctor bills
  • X-rays
  • Test results
  • Insurance claims
  • Pet health records
  • Apartment leases
  • Tax records
  • Driver’s license
  • Passport
  • Contracts
  • Product warranties

In part two, we'll examine how to find a tool that’s right for you.

I have personally seen the high costs and inner workings of the health care system. My best friend was in a coma for 12 days and had brain surgery. My mom battled leukemia for 10 months and passed away in February of 2007. I know firsthand that our health care system is in dire need of change and am personally dedicated to working to bring about that change.
