More Americans are turning to food stamps in order to make ends meet.
Over the last year, the number of people receiving food stamps has risen in 43 states. In Kentucky, a staggering one in seven residents receives food stamp benefits. One in eight people receives benefits in Michigan.
Households that qualify for the food stamp program receive $100 per person each month. While this financial assistance helps, many people say it is not enough. Take a look at a video on food stamps that aired on CBS Evening News.
Earlier this month the Congressional Budget Office projected the number of people on food stamps will rise to 28 million in the next fiscal year. This is an increase from the 27.8 million recipients in 2008 and 26.5 million in 2007.
Experts are attributing the increase in recipients to the state of the economy and inflation in the cost of basic necessities.
