That's a great post. I was a community college graduate, while my brother went straight to UCLA. We both ended up with diplomas from the same school, but my costs were significantly less.

I hear a lot of kids say that's it's good to get away due to parents, getting the college experience, etc. I don't buy it. You have much more fun (and the monetary resources to do it) when you're older.

College is and will always be a great financial investment, but there are things you can do along the way to minimize your exposure to too much debt.

I have a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from an Australian university. I'm now doing a Diploma of Accounting through the Australian equivalent of a community college. My main criteria were (a) a course that teaches book-keeping and (b) did not require class attendance. The Open Learning (work at own pace at home) course I'm doing meets those criteria. It's also cheaper than a Bachelor of Commerce from a uni (although I might do that later).

Good post. I graduated with 10 great friends in middle school. 4 of us went to great private schools, 3 went to a great charter school, 2 went to public school, and 1 is being home-schooled. Of us who went to private schools, we are at Carnegie Mellon, RPI, Middlebury and Bard, those who went to charter school are going to MIT, Wesleyan and Williams. Unfortunately my friends' public school burnt them out so badly one left early and the other barely survived. They, and my home-schooled friend, are all at community college--it is a world class opportunity for them to fall in love with school again (something community colleges can focus on more than big 4-years). They are living at home, getting the credits they need, and they will be able to transfer into the UC system ahead.

Good deal, and a great way to make up for a cruddy public school experience.
