A Loaf of Bread into a Bag of Croutons

I love a good sourdough bread, especially with a touch of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and fresh pepper. My wife and I use to go through a loaf in a week.

We don't eat quite as much bread as we use to, so we're often stuck with a corner chunk worthy of the trash. But no longer. On Sunday, I decided to cut the remaining piece into cubes and feed them to the ducks that wander about in our apartment complex. We're not supposed to, but oh well.

The bread didn't get to the ducks though. Rather, my wife drizzled some olive oil, garlic, and pepper on the bread cubs. She then placed them in the oven for 30 minutes, and out came croutons - the best croutons I have ever eaten!

This isn't quite the same as making orange juice from oranges, but before you throw away your food that's almost gone bad, consider transforming it into something different. With food prices on the rise, good croutons may change how you feel about salad, and they may satisfy your craving for chips.

Next, we're going to find something to do with our browning bananas.

How much more is food costing you? Have you decided to eat at home more often?

Money matters to me as much as it probably matters to you. I know what it’s like to feel anxious, confused, and angry while trying to figure out how much to spend on rent, where to find a job, or which credit card to use. These are the types of decisions we all must face.

Qvisory is opening a space to discuss these issues, learn from each other, and creatively advocate for money, work, and health issues that affect our daily life.

Funny that you mention banana bread. My wife is making some right now! Since we haven't been eating out as much, we are trying to use that extra time to be more resourceful with our at-home leftovers.

I agree Jason. There are so many ways to not to waste food. I like to take scraps of veggies or ones that are "forgotten" and make a stock instead of tossing them out. Stocks make everything taste better than just adding water. I also do this with various types of meat and their bones. Perfect for soups which are of course can be garnished with homemade croutons! By the way, may I suggest banana bread? Think of all the money we save by using all our resources.
